Seuss books — including "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street" and "If I Ran the Zoo" — will stop being published because of racist and insensitive imagery, the business that preserves and protects the author's legacy said Tuesday. While Dr Seuss remains a beloved figure in children’s literature, his legacy has come under increasing scrutiny from parents and educators. The list of affected books does not include any of his highly celebrated titles such as Green Eggs and Ham, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Cat in the Hat or The Lorax. Seuss Enterprises, which manages his publishing catalogue, says it made the move to protect and preserve the author’s legacy. In 2017, a school librarian in Cambridge, Massachusetts, criticized a gift of 10 Seuss books from first lady Melania Trump, saying many of his works were "steeped in racist propaganda, caricatures, and harmful stereotypes. Seuss Enterprises, however, said it is "committed to listening and learning and will continue to review our entire portfolio.The announcement was made on Geisel’s birthday, which is also the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day.
